Mizu, the West End namesake of its Teneriffe sibling, is a slick contemporary Japanese eatery found in the line-up of cheap and cheerful Chinese-Vietnamese eateries of the old Rialto Theatre precinct.

The black minimalist interior is warmed by the lighting and the odd kimono adorning the wall and the menu here is based on that of Mizu 1 – a mix of share plates divided into sashimi, meat, seafood and vegetables. And, in signature Mizu style, this is excellent well-priced Japanese food that is served up quickly and efficiently.

From the vegetable choices come delish dishes such as Tofu and Rasu Dengaku (silky fried tofu with eggplant, zucchini and sweet red miso rice) and from the sashimi section Salmon Ponzu (fresh Tasmanian salmon with house made ponzu sauce) or Mizupeccio (Carpaccio, Mizu style: the chef’s choice of sashimi with soy and grape seed oil, salt and lemon).

Mizu has been quietly building a loyal following at its Teneriffe location for a while now, serving fresh, contemporary takes on traditional Japanese dishes and offering what must be the only Japanese breakfast menu in Brisbane.

Now they’re bringing “Mizu style” to West End.

Occupying the old premises of Red Hen, the bold red walls have been repainted black and the décor kept minimalist. The staff are super friendly and keen to make sure your dining experience is perfect.

Divided neatly into sections, the Mizu menu is one designed to be shared. Agedashi tofu is a popular choice, with large cubes of fried silken tofu in light tempura batter swimming in a sauce that could only be described as unctuous. The twice-cooked crispy chicken is perfectly presented, topped with rocket and yakiniku sauce. And the freshness of the seaweed salad is a nice break from the richness of the other dishes.

There’s no Japanese breakfast menu offered at this stage, and the liquor license is still in the mail, so it’s BYO for the moment. Regardless, if you’re a local you just got one more reason not to fire up the stove. And if you’re not, Mizu is worth crossing the river for.

The Mizu team are busily putting the final touches to the new Mizu at West End, ready for our soft-opening for dinner on Wed 1st May.

The new restaurant is situated in the heart of the West End restaurant district at 63 Hardgrave Road, West End.

The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner | 7 days a week.

Please note that until we receive our Liquor License ( pending) Mizu West End is BYO only. Soft drinks and green teas available
